JB welded transmission? Send it!

LOL, in all seriousness good luck. Are you going to be able to insure it for street use?

Absolutely. I mean it is holding fluid ok so I'm fine with the temp fix lol. No concerns that I will be able to register fine. The airbag didn't blow but the seat belts locked up. I sent those out with the SRS module last week for rebuild / reset. It was about $500

I think I got a decent deal. Watched a t boned 2024 FL5 with 3k miles sell for low 20s as well. It was hit so hard the passenger seat was pushed into the center console 😬. Mine has "higher" miles at 28k but it was well taken care of.

The real surprise was the new window in the trans. Funny thing is the service writer didn't even know it had a hole. I found a blown FK8 trans about an hour away that I am going to roll the dice on. Comparing pics and everything the case is highly likely the same as the FL5. Labor aside, I talked the dude down from $500 to $350 for the bad trans and I really just need the outside half of the case. Honda just doesn't sell them.

As far as firewall, massage it back into place the best I can, weld it up to make sure it is strong and safe, maybe pay a body shop if I am not happy with what I can do. Still trying to figure it out as I go really...

You may not want to try and fix it, then take it to a bodyshop as they seem to charge more for botched repair attempts.

Thats a good point. I would use a body guy I have been friends with for 10+ years. I may want to have him look at the damage before I do anything/ or mess something up though...

Well I got the car in the garage to pull the trans. Went to change the LCA and realized I would be dropping the subframe so Im swapping the outer tabs case off the FK8 trans I bought. Side by side everything looks identical so far. Fingers crossed. I may end up buying the spoon or PRL subframe collar kit...I will be working on and off to try and get everything back together in the next week or so. At least as far as trans and suspension.

Too bad the engine bay is so dirty, still a cool pic by my EF8. Which unfortunately will be sold due to my FL5 purchase...

Project is in full swing now. Got both of the trans cases opened up this morning. Confirmed the fl5 and FK8 share the same case. I was pretty sure...but you know. All of the bearing shims were the exact same so that was also good. I am going to try and reassemble tonight so I can start putting the trans back in tomorrow. I got some wheels from another member here so that was good. Also measured the damaged firewall based on the passenger side. This thing is moving along ok. Always more work than you think...and everything takes longer than I expect. Having fun though, excited to daily this bad boy. Here are some progress pics!

I like your strategy on the wood trim shaping tool as a side by side comparison of how the inner fender is dented. Will you attempt to pull it out? May have to get a shop to do this on a frame rack.

Dude do some trans strengthening while you’re in there, it’s all right there while you have it apart. I’ve heard there are some weak points in these transmissions, don’t remember what they all are, but man alive id be doing it while that’s all apart as a ā€œwhile you’re in thereā€

Curious...What transmission weak points and strengthening are you referring to and suggesting? He is restoring an FL5 to get it back on the road and seems to be headed in the right direction to get the work done correctly with advice from others to consult with a body shop.

All I can recall is 4th gear being weak but I’m sure there are other things that more knowledgeable folks can chime in about

Well now I'm curious too. If there are weak points for higher hp cars then that wouldn't be a concern for me. Weak points for tracking, this is just going to be a daily driver with some spirited mountain drives sprinkled here and there. I went back and forth on replacing the clutch as well but the car only has 28k miles and it looks good....I would just never have a trans out and not do the clutch but the car is two years old. Also thought about changing bearings and maybe syncros but again it is so new. Tbh I bought the car so I could have a decent daily for 30k give or take, and not cry Everytime I got a rock chip if I bought a brand new one for 50k. ( I'll still be upset about dings and chips 😁)

Don't listen to these guys. There's a bunch of fl5 running around with 500+ stock gearbox. If you're going to drag race and launch it often things will break.
