I agree with the "while you are there" mentality. Just don't want to go overboard on unnecessary things either.

On a side note, I tried to download the factory service manual someone posted on the forum. It didn't work, but I'd like to have access to something with reassembly instructions. Any chance someone with a copy can take a look and share here? I know they can not hit or miss on detail but something is better than nothing...going to try and get the trans back in this weekend most likely. Thanks in advance!

Well first attempt at putting the outer case on was a fail. It was holding up on the reverse gear best I can tell. I can't tell exactly where the shift mechanism should be and I wiggled it around while tightening the case, started to try and tighten it down and heard a pop. Turns out I messed up the reverse synchro. I was able to steal the one off my parts trans, but I tried to reassemble dry this time and it still feels like it's hanging up somewhere. I may just have a trans shop finish assembly. What are the odds someone has had one of these apart and can give some guidance? They seem almost identical to an FK8 trans.

Congrats on saving a fun car! It's a labor of love, and when it it allows you to see how this machine was designed to run you will be glad you did!

Can't help out much in the rebuild, as I bought my FL5 new. But I definitely was looking as rebuildable options coming though auctions.

Having saved a 2001 ITR, 2000 EM1, and various other cars through the years from worse auction fates, I found my curiosity come on for the FL5 when these started hitting the road...and hitting stationary things o_O

Sounds like you have some fun projects in the past! The love is gone at this point but it'll come back once I can move past the trans issues. Woke up early this morning to give things another go before work. Thought I had it this time but once it was all together one of the shift arms wouldn't move, so hopefully I didn't mess up something else. Three local trans shops said they don't do manual trans anymore, one quoted me $2500-3000 at which point I could just buy an eBay special. ( There are like 3 or so). I did find a few shops out of state, one shops says $2300 to rebuild and about $300 shipping. Just hate to give up when I feel so close...I may call some Honda dealers near by to see if any will take a swing at it

Ah man, that is rough to hear. Access to Honda factory information would definitely help the reassembly; I glanced at another subscription service I have access to but it isn't clearly lined out with reassembly. I grabbed three screen shots of images shown, related to the shifter, maybe this helps you out.

Awesome project. I want to work on a rebuild project sometime soon, maybe next few years. Money and time.....

2 Kids and trying to maintain a crazy life is hard. I think once the kids are a little older and I can have some play money I'll do something like this, just been wondering what a good car to start on would be.

Keep it going my man! I'm excited to see your final results.

Thanks for the screenshots. I feel like I am overcomplicating it but something is off. I'm going to take it apart and try again tonight. A friend of a friend works at a Honda dealer and said he would help me out this weekend if I can't get it.

Life is busy but definitely more so with kids / family. You are smart to wait until things settle down, maybe I'll learn that some day....

You are just ambitious, nothing wrong with that. Just remember to spend time just living and loving the people you can while you can. There will always be time to work on hobbies you just got to find the right time.

You got this my man, good luck!

Thanks for the words of encouragement my friend!

To add some context to the title of this thread...I looked/ bid on several FL5s over a couple months span. Finally decided to bid on a 2025 si when those all went too high. I won that, then a couple weeks later this one came up and I decided to bid. Long story short, Yes I am ambitious, in this case I bit off more than I could chew lol. I'm making good progress though. The Si got dropped off for paint yesterday. It only has 300 miles, pretty crazy. Super nice car but I was always going to want the Type R.

Maybe find some local car/honda car groups on FB and ask if anyone has experience assembling FWD manual transmissions. Someone should chime in and know a guy that does it as a side hustle.

A friend of a friend in a local S2000 group works at Honda dealer. I tried to set it again yesterday and the shift arms still didn't feel right. This dude said to bring it up to his place tonight so we could take a look. Hopefully he has the magic touch!

My air hammer attachments showed up yesterday, so I can test them out on the damaged wheel well area. Seem like they might do the trick.

Hopefully you can flip that SI and the profits would have paid for all the FL5 parts and then some.

I'll be lucky if I make 1-2k on the Si unfortunately. Definitely not worth it if I bought to flip. I bought it to keep long term, and fixed with 99% OEM parts, it's basically a brand new car with 300 miles, but probably only worth around 25k with a rebuilt title.

Honestly depending on how the type R ends up, cost wise, and how quick the Si does or doesn't sell, there is a small chance I end up keeping it and selling the FL5. That would be a little sad but not the end of the world.
