Took my subframe off when doing my lower arm bushings upgrade. Should have just fixed this myself. If it can be done without dropping the subframe and redoing my alignment thatā€™d be delightful.

I just got the letter in the mail for my 24 FL5 today. I was waiting for that before doing anything because the car drives fine and I (like many others here) was not a fan of the first repair procedure involving the dealer dropping the subframe. Like others mentioned, the procedure was changed in the updated TSB from 10/18 to not require dropping the subframe. The TSB was updated a few times after that, and these are the changes from what I can tell:
  • October 22
    • Added a separate warranty claim item for Type Rs with the Type R-specific part number that failed.
  • October 25
    • Added a note that dealers may use the previous method because of the limited supply of the kit needed to do the new method.
  • November 1
    • Honda forbids dealers from using the previous method. Also requires that they send any kits used for the previous method back to Honda if they still have them in stock.
So, I guess that means since November 1st all recalls must be done with the new procedure.

For those interested, I've attached the different versions of the TSB.

I already have Spoon rigid collars installed. In the event I get this recall done and they drop my subframe, I would hope they know how to put the collars back in properly...

Read above. They are not dropping the subframe anymore. They havenā€™t since the procedure changed back on 10/18.

Honda changed the procedure on 10/18, but allowed dealers to still use the old procedure temporarily since the kit for the new procedure was in limited supply. As of 11/1 Honda no longer allows dealers to use the old procedure, so if you get the recall done they won't drop the subframe. If they do, go right to the service manager with a copy of the TSB saying they're not allowed to do that. Authorized dealers HAVE to follow the procedures dictated by Honda, especially for recalls.

Thank you so much @honman for the service bulletin and the revisions. I ordered the 3 tools and kit from my local Honda dealer. Total was under $120.00 and repair was very easy.

Since you did the work yourself, if you ever decide to sell the car later, the records will still show an open recall. I donā€™t know if this could give you headaches (later) since it is safety related and obviously you donā€™t want to burden any liability. Note that dealerships arenā€™t allowed to sell any cars with this recall until theyā€™re fixed. If push came to shove you could have it redone by a Honda dealershipā€¦which may be better, again, just for liability reasons and closing out that recall on the carā€™s records. Just something to consider.

Yes thanks, I thought about that and talked to service rep at dealership when I paid for the parts and kit. He said to drive car over when done and buy some wiper blades for them to install and he would mark the recall done. I have had my 24 Type R almost a year and still less then 1k miles as I have a small collection of cars and do my own work. I said I would show some pictures/vids of the repair being done to waive any liability towards dealership of faulty repair. He said not needed but he would clear the recall either way. Told him this would be best to avoid any stress for either of us šŸ˜. They were very nice about the whole thing.

I also didnā€™t have any rub marks on control arm otherwise I would have just taken it in cause it would then need new tires etc.

Thatā€™s great! Good job thinking ahead too!
