My 1990 Sony Walkman cassette player works fine with my FL5

No answer ?
Poster never specified connectivity details. A 1990 Sony Walkman cassette player works fine in every situation where you have wired headsets/earbuds connected to it's analog 3.5mm connection. Go for a run and have fun.

Bluetooth connectivity on the other hand would require physical connectivity from the analog 3.5mm output to a Bluetooth RX/TX device such as this to transmit to another device such as the FL5 infotainment system:

You buy latest model car with the latest tech ie, wireless andriod auto, carplay, sat radio & want to connect you obsolete tech to it  . I bet you guys attached old-school Garmin GPS on your windshield 😂. Better to sell your R and get a 90's civic.

That's why I suggest to buy a second hand I Pod with bluetooth..

For your information, I travel a lot by car in North America and Europe and a GPS in the windshield (I have a Tom-Tom) is often superior to Waze and Google maps on my I Phone for getting me to the right places. So I use both on long trips. “Around" the house, whatever works well.

Digital music files are not obsolete tech. For those that have a large collection accumulated over the years, it is nice that the vehicle provides a "Bluetooth Audio" input to play music that you already own but may have saved on other storage devices (e.g., CD, iPod, SD Card, external drive, etc.).

Use of streaming to play music is convenient but the sound quality varies across apps. You also have to put up with usage monitoring, commercials, subscription fees, and other crap.

I did not buy the FL5 because of its included convenience tech features; most of them I do not even use. If you happen to like or use those that is cool. Do you also like the TCU?

Unfortunately whatever music files you have doesn't matter since the Civic sound system is subpar..........

Bitrate of the music files matters.

Bitrate and sound quality matters based on what the bottleneck is - in this case I'm gonna bet the downloaded music is. That said, an average person couldn't hear the difference until the speakers start rattling.
