Worm Gear Recall Fix Reviews

Hi. I just got the worm gear recall performed on my 2024 type r. As soon as I drove away I noticed a big difference in steering. When I now turn the wheel while driving the steering wheel does not return to center. If I let the steering wheel go in the middle of a turn the wheel will stay turned and keep turning. I returned to Honda to tell them about it and the said it was installed correctly. I don’t know if it is because of a weaker return spring or if it was performed incorrectly. Looking for input from those who had it done. Feels completely different and not right.

What you described is my car BEFORE the repair, which I haven't had done yet. My car from initial start is fine, then a bit of driving the steering stiffens and doesn't come back to center going through a turn. I continue driving say 40 minutes and it goes away. Steering is then natural like when I bought it. I will take the car in after the holidays. I received the recall letter.

I'm still getting the "we .don't have the parts yet" story on my wife's '24.
I don't drive her car often, but I really don't like the steering feel.

My '21 CTR still has an outstanding recall for the "Airbag Weight Sensor". Same story - no parts yet.

they should just replace the rack if the recall doesn't work. There's a TSB for that.

Replaced. Car feels fine. Although it did not feel bad before the fix.

Yep. Was going to do that for sure. Going to push the to call corporate to make sure they are using correct parts and performing it correctly

You might give the dealership one more chance to make it right before calling their parents. In these situations its best to stay calm and diplomatic unless the dealership is truly being difficult and unhelpful. You don’t want to make an enemy of someone you’re entrusting to fix your car. Later, if you decide not to take your car back to them for future maintenance, then that’s up to you.

I scheduled the Steering Rack Worm Gear fix a couple days ago since they were able get the repair kit. Drove the car after I picked it up later that evening and the next day. Things appear to be in working order so far.

I’m wondering if the technician didn’t follow all the steps. From what I know, there are only 2 (pretty simple) things that are to be done. 1. Replace the worm gear spring with the new/better one (in the kit). 2. Re-grease / add grease to the worm gear assembly.

I’m thinking if the technician didn’t do step 2 or didn’t do it enough, then it might be causing your problem. In a test drive, surely they would’ve noticed it not returning to center. Maybe they never tested it?

Probably hard for tech to notice the steering not coming back to neutral if the tech just drove around the block. It's more noticeable in a tight turn at higher speed than local road limits. For example, on a curved entrance ramp you will notice the sticky steering as you will have to nudge the wheel back to center.

Plus, techs not that great at what they do. They just replace part and move on to next repair. I bet most techs don't even know what the symptom of the swollen worm gear even feels like.

@Bandit_TypeR True! But because this is a safety recall one would think they’d be more mindful. Then again, like you said, sometimes techs aren’t good and their brains are on autopilot. Fix car. Go to next.

I don't think they're mindful. They just move from car to car to get the work done. My guess is that they installed the spring and additional grease correctly. With that said, the parts are being mass produced to meet the demand of the recall. You could've got a bad spring. I believe the repair kit comes with a torque tool so probably the spring was torqued correctly. I also wonder if you drove the car for a bit if the steering improves. The spring might need a bit of time to "settle" down. Regardless, I am sure it will get sorted out.

Yes, I don't think they did test drive it. When I go back out I will have them test drive with me.
