How much hit do you take in fuel mileage if you tune your car?...

... assuming I drive the same pre tune vs post tune (and we know I probably won't).

The reason I asked is; I have a Vdub GTI that tuned to stage 2 and the normal transportation style driving fuel economy actually increased 1-2 mpg (35 mpg). The Unitronic stage 2 tune advertised fuel optimization as part of the upgrade and I guess it's true.

So I wonder if Hondata tunes optimize fuel economy in a normal driving environment or if it will burn more fuel than a factory tune? The reason I ask is 80% of my driving is on city streets and to car shows where I'm not exactly flogging the engine all the time. :dunno: I want the best of both worlds, if possible.

Most people ive seen have said they experienced better mileage or the same OFC everyone drives a bit more spiritedly causing it to be lower but for the same driving they get the same mpg

depends on how your tune is set up.

If you want the best for your motor, mileage will be worse.

Currently just have the PRL HVI intake and tuned through @Jester04…30mpg is what I’m averaging per tank which I’m honestly shocked with lol. I do mostly highway though and keep it in 6th just cruising. I probably do one decent pull every time I drive it though and still average 30mpg

I was getting 32 mpg in my 2017 BMW 240. Flashed to almost 400 hp.

I think it might be gearing. My Vdub GTI mk7 gets 36 mpg pretty easy and it's Unitronic stage 2 @ 337 hp. I usually just cruise but jump into it once or twice every time I have it out. Gearing is noticeably taller than the Honda.

The Type R got a best of 32 just driving it pretty easy around rural roads with not much stop and go ... but 27 to 30 while driving slightly more aggressive. I had a K20 Acura RSX type S that got 36 mpg pretty regularly. Of course it wasn't nearly as quick as the Type R.

That's pretty good. Maybe his tuning optimizes the fuel mileage when you aren't romping it.
