This is gold, had a similar argument about fuel qualities with someone and the notion of a fuel standard existing (and more so being followed to the tee) is hilarious to me.

Standards exist as a bare minimum for products, just because a product meets the standard for top tier does not mean other products that meet top tier don't surpass it.

This part is heresay, but I've had people swear by speedway even though it's technically not top tier. On the other hand I've had people swear that Valero is horrible (the shop I go to for work says explicitly to avoid USA and Valero in our area), yet it meets top tier requirements.

I'd trust a tuning company that sees tons of cars on the daily over my own or people's heresay though.

My tuner for some other cars generally always noted that the gas doesn't matter as much (if you are getting top tier) as making sure you always get the same gas as your tune will be based on that fuels qualities. (Mainly talking about custom tunes).

Not sure how true that was but that's what they stood by.

Here is a good description of why gas is different between companies. Yes it's the same base gas from the refineries, but they all add different additives. Top Tier is another level of classification, meaning a different minimum standard they meet.

Your tuners advice seems perfectly fine, I think what's being argued here is not whether your gas is consistently the same in your area (or whatever metrics are advertised), it's whether it's the same across the board in multiple regions. If your tune is made for Mobil 93 in NY, then you'll always be fine at that 93, but Mobil 93 in Florida will likely be different (even if it's still technically top tier, and meets the minimum standards).

Is the problem overblown and argued to all hell, yes. I highly doubt you'd destroy an engine using different gas with the same octane from somewhere else.

Is it me or does the tsp tune look a little smoother than the other tunes? I am started to look at tunes and this is very helpful. I wish we could get a tune before we buy.

I think that exists for Volkswagen's. You basically get 3 key cycles, then it turns back in to a pumpkin.

Lots of variables between testing, the smoothness on the dyno can vary. But seat of the pants feeling is what will tell the story.

I completely understand all the variables between dyno runs and such. It just looked like the tsp tune was smoothed out.
How much gains are we talking with a custom tune for the street. In your opinion is it that much over off the shelf tune, only running 93 and stock turbo.

I can’t speak from experience, but I understand the custom tunes are quite a step up from the off the shelf Hondata map. Hondata probably made theirs as a one tune fits all, where someone like Jester is looking at your your personal datalogs and dialing everything in specifically for your car and your fuel.

Well custom tuning goes a long way to really dial in the car. In my opinion it is worth it on the sole purpose you get a way better value than what OTS maps offer. I have gotten so many OTS users that they regret going with that first just because of what I offer service wise compared to the other offerings.
