What people still fail to realize is that the FL5 was released at a time of extreme inflation which is why we saw weird things like the 21 FK8 selling for close to the same MSRP as the FL5 on the used market.

Everyone who was bashing people paying ADM on 2023 models are now paying $3K+ for the same car because the MSRP increased. Plus whatever ADM is still existing 2 years later. In my region they're still asking $5-$10K markup for an FL5...

The Elantra N is the ugliest performance car I've seen in the last decade. Previous offerings from Hyundai were better which is why for so many people it's irrelevant to cross-shop the two of them. Many of us also value resale value which we all know will be much higher on the Honda or Acura products.

I get a giggle the way people talk like they are on a perch when comparing Honda to Hyundai, being a little older you remember when everyone bashed Honda for being basic and not very good looking. Beauty is subjective but numbers are not, you get 95% of a type r with an Elantra n for 10-15k less and it’s the value proposition in this segment period. Will the Honda keep its value longer, yes and in terms of reliability Honda has a better (but falling) reputation and record. But in the end they are both economic cars, they are not exotic or even that fast. So this looking down at Hyundai attitude is ridiculous it’s a Honda it’s not a bmw, Lamborghini, Ferrari or Porsche. People acting like they are sipping champagne when it’s just boxed wine lol, yall need to calm down with that.

I think it's the opposite. CTR drivers don't want the EN to be a true competitor but it is.

The CTR is faster around a track — it's lighter and has more power and wider tires. But it's not that much faster.

Where the CTR wins in my mind is a more timeless design, a better form factor, and a better transmission. But another buyer might prefer that they can get more laps out of the EN without overheating, or a more daily-friendly suspension, or having a car that doesn't sound terrible. Or saving $10K+. At the end of the day they are both good cars and there are good reasons to choose both.
Will they really save 10K in the long term?

That is the question.

Only time will tell.

I never wanted a Hyundai in my 20s. I wanted a s2000, NSX, Teggy Type R. Now a while later I can own the current Honda "halo" car. That's worth 10k to me.

$200 a month in a vacuum is not a substantial amount of money…but comparing 2 similar products, having one for example at $800/mo and the other at $600/mo is a substantial difference. My initial point is that a $10k price difference from a $45k car is a substantial difference, enough to justify purchasing an N over a Type R. I don’t think im making a crazy statement by saying that, it’s simple math.
I think I understand your point. Who would pay more for a similar product right? If buying an FL5 is a stretch purchase than of course many would be better served by the performance per dollar advantage of the EN. This is the same argument as asking why would someone buy a $1000 flagship phone when there are $700 mid-tier phones that have similar performance. Some people would never consider an Android phone at any price. Some people would never consider a Hyundai either.

the average age of an Elantra N owner and CTR owner is probably very different. I see the CTR owner as being more mature, a bit older, and the EN owners being much younger, definitely 1st car vibes for many.
Every time I’ve seen an EN, it was a college (or college aged) “kid” driving.

I had one and realized the demographic afterwards. I got rid of it and even paid ADM on my first FL5 just to move on and get the car I actually wanted.

Being in the car game a long time now, the community to me is just as important as the car.

I get a giggle when people think we're talking down on the N just because we voice our opinion about our cars lol. It is a Type R forum, you're going to get people defending their purchase. I'm sure if I were to go to an N forum it would be the other way around. It's a fact that Hyundai is not at the same level as Honda as a brand in general, if it was we'd be having a completely different coversation. "You get 95% of a Type R with an Elantra N" I personally think that is complete BS because to me the looks, interior, seats, shifter/transmission feel, motor, chasis, and exclusivity puts the Type R in a top tier level for me....but again that is MY opinion. Doesn't mean I look down on someone just cause they went the N route. I'm glad there are options for everyone

yeah I don’t remember mentioning you exactly but a majority of the comments in this thread revolve around the “brand” and “demographic” of the car. There is very little discussion on the actual concept which is the cold hard facts that N is faster 0-60 and almost as competent on the track hence the 95% comment. So maybe read the thread? I appreciate your nuance about not looking down but a majority of people in the thread don’t have that view and that’s my opinion.

Must be in a very different area than me around me Honda is considered king for reliability and overall build quality. Toyota's are looking less favorable with Lexus probably tying Honda as public consensus with everyone I hang around.

I've gotten more comments from people at my gym about how much they love Honda and their next vehicle will be another Honda and how smart a choice the car was vs people caring its a type R haha

I read the thread in its entirety, you did not mention me directly but I have indeed defended this car and voiced my opinion in previous N vs R threads, pretty much summing up that I believe the Type R is a much better car. So when you say "the way people talk like they are on a perch" you're generalizing everyone that's said the Type R is the better car (which I have said before).

Regardless, you buy what you like! I could care less if the DCT version of the N has a faster 0-60....it could have a 2 sec 0-60 for all I care. I'm still buying the R lol.

You realize that people now are just getting them for msrp. So that means that the majority paid over msrp. So it really makes your argument a moot point lol
You also have to remember the countless forum members who are willing to purchase an FL5 that put off their purchase BECAUSE of a mark up that was usually over $5k and some cases over $10k. If they had your logic that $10k shouldn’t make a difference to a buyer who can afford a $40k car then all these FL5s would’ve sold with a $10k mark up…

Willing to purchase and able to purchase are two total different things. I'm willing to buy a island off the south of France. However I will hold off till the mark up come down. This will be my last response to you lol
