First FL5 oil change mileage?

I'm hoping we are allowed to use any Honda dealer to service the free oil change, not just the dealer where it was purchased (in which case is 100 miles from me).

I'd like to use Mobil 1 but need to see what this car requires as far as API service codes.

Yes with Honda Service Pass you can go to any Honda dealership. You can use pretty much any API SN rated oil

900 miles is too early for an oil change. The oil placed in the car at the factory has a special blend in for break in. Changing it too early WILL not work in your favor. Best to wait til the maintenance minder gets to at least 40%

But what if that 900 miles was over a years time? I for one work from home so putting miles on my CTR is rare, into my 5th month of ownership and just crossed 600 miles.

If it’s over a year then you should definitely change it. Oil should be changed at least once a year regardless of mileage driven

The maintenance reminder will adjust the fact that you don't drive much.

For example, you drove 5,000 miles over 8 months. Then you decide to enjoy yourself somewhere nice for the rest of the year. The maintenance minder should be like 10 percent or so and ask you to service the car by the time you are back.

Another scenario. Say you did your first service that has an oil change, but the weather is has been lousy for the next 6 months. Then you feel like to take it for a nice drive in summer. The maintenance minder may read 50 percent oil life you turn it on.

Whatever the case it is, regardless of how little miles you put over a year, you should change your oil once a year.

I noticed this on mine. I have 1,600 miles on my DE5 now after 6 months of ownership and the MM is showing 60%.

If it was based purely on mileage, this puts me on track at 4,000 mi OCI. If purely based on time, I'd be at 3,200 so we'll see.

Either way, I'm planning on doing my first oil change at the year mark and no later.

I've found a lot of good info on the forums about the first oil change etc. It's been very helpful in trying to figure out when to do my first oil change.

Personally, I am in the habit of doing the first oil change around 1000-1500miles or so. My most recent new cars were 2020 Subaru WRX and 2023 Camaro SS 1LE. Apparently that is not as important with the Type R from what I have gathered. I would still like to get the oil changed before 5k miles though. I can definitely understand why there is so much discussion on this topic. I just wanted to add some input on what my local dealers telling me on my 2025 Type R..

Apparently the 2 year service plan is no longer a thing for 2025 models. The newest model year only has 1 year and 1 service free. They said the absolute EARLIEST I can bring mine in is when the oil light says 30%. I'm currently around 2800 miles (80% oil life) as a daily driver, 90% highway miles with no traffic and very few stop lights. It does see a lot of cold starts now though with temps getting as low as 15 degrees F (winter weather now). I try to baby it in the mornings until it warms up a bit. I read somewhere that another forum post said their dealership used an oil blend, so I wanted to check what my dealership used. They said they use 0-20 full synthetic.

After I get that free service and 1st oil change knocked out, I will continue what I have always done in the past and do the maintenance myself. Running Mobile1 full synthetic 0-20 every 5000 miles. Haven't checked yet, but hopefully Mobile1 sells that OEM weight.

Brought mine in to the dealer for its first oil change @ 3,6xx miles (40% oil life). They tried to talk me out of changing the oil that early and wanted me to come back when it was at 5,000 miles, saying its special oil etc. if I change it now it can cause problems later.

I said no, change it today, I'm good. They print out the service form and include this same message about potentially causing problems later - and want me to initial it. I said I'm not signing that ridiculousness - it's not like I'm asking them to change it with 50 miles on the odo.

They think they are too good for OEM oil and want to sound badass changing the oil right away. I'll change mine when the light comes on. When the NISMO/HOMO GT-Type R comes out I might change it every 4 miles.
