Cobb has finally announced support for the FL5 starting today. I know for myself, I have been on the fence about Hondata, mostly due to shipping of my ECU. But also, due to the fact I have 0 reputable hondata tuners in my area/state that I am aware of.

That said, I am excited to see another option for the platform, I've used Accessports on several of my past vehicles and the local shop support has been great here in the PNW.

Does anyone actually use an in person tuner for Honda anymore? I know I've been tuning online since the 8th gen.

great question, I have no idea, this is my first honda, its very common in our area to tune "in person" on a dyno coming from Sti, Evo, porsche. Also, do not feel comfortable doing it myself.

Accessport still requires ECU to be shipped and unlocked, per Cobb. Details here:
https://cobbtuning.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/PRS/pages/3262578752/Honda+Acura+22+ECU+Removal

I was dyno tuned (not e-tuned) at IMW via Hondata and have no issues. I was a former Cobb guy as well, but since I am already tuned by Derek, just going to stick with what I have.
Yes I noticed that after I posted, however, the process to ship to cobb seems pretty seamless, they ship you a box with return shipping and overnighted back to you, not sure if there is any extra cost or not I did not see a separate charges. Also, no need to write down a credit card number on a sheet of paper, which for me was a bit sketch, not saying it identity theft would happen but my mind is very flawed thinking of worst case all the time.

Shipping is included both ways and there is no jailbreak fee. Both Hondata and Cobb Tuning are reputable companies. There's nothing wrong with going with who you're comfortable with.

This is the way for me if I do go the tuning route, I have so many more tuners locally that are very good that work with Cobb and a good dyno tune is the safest and best option imho. Glad to see Cobb step in, plus 725 and that includes shipping and unlocking is a really good deal.

Only the select few that live near a reputable tuner. I think most have learned that an online tune by someone that knows the platform in depth always beats a dyno tune from their local tuner that may have limited (if any) experience with the turbocharged Honda platforms.

All local tuners are not bad! (Obviously) But, we must be careful to check the experience of the tuner on this specific platform. The world's best Cobb Subaru tuner may not have a clue on how to safely maximize the potential of the FL5 or DE5.

THIS is what people should be looking at.
Our cars ECU works in a unique way.

Personally I wouldn't even consider COBB until it matures in a few years.

FlashPro is $795. The Hondata jailbreak form states "Jailbreak $275 plus freight ($60 USA / $110USD Canada /$125 Puerto Rico)". So total would be just over $1k? Sorry, guess I could just contact Hondata.

There are a few of us that tune on Hondata in person and remote. Some of us also travel to tune cars in person as long as there are a few cars to make the trip worth it.

just be mindful that you can’t turn off codes on Cobb. This car is very sensitive and will throw a code for minimal things especially if you go deeper with mods. So take that in consideration when choosing a platform.

I will say this for tuning type R’s. It is not black magic and knowledge on other platforms will translate well. But there is a learning curve on the way the ecu works and seat time is needed.

There's no need to call or e-mail. It's clear what the cost is. FlashPro + Jailbreak Service + Shipping. If you're comparing cost, and my comment is limited to cost, Cobb Tuning's solution is cheaper.

This is helpful to call out and a noteworthy distinction. The Cobb Accessport can clear DTCs but it cannot delete them, or "turn them off". In other words, if you have a catless downpipe on the car and the DTC code pops for it, you can clear it; however, it will return at some point. You cannot disable the code.

Are the high flow cat down pipes known to throw this code as well?

In my opinion, Hondata has a ton of experience with the FL5 and exclusively works with Honda. Cobb is a corporate solution who just wants to get a piece of a market they think can make them some more money.

My vote is Hondata and the already reputable Honda tuners. Remote tuning is a great solution.

A few examples just to throw out there and considerations. I just hate to see people waste money.

Catless and some catted downpipes will trigger a CEL, some intakes will do as well, if you upgrade your turbo and it is moving a lot of air you can also get a CEL. Upgraded bypass valves like the RV6 ones will also trigger a code.

Also this has nothing to do with me tuning on Hondata just to be clear, I used to tune a lot of Cobb back in the day also. But they have been known to drop support for some Accessports out of the blue if the product is not selling well since they won’t waste time and resources into a failing product.

A few cars that some of you might not remember that were supported, RX8 and 8th gen civic got dropped, same with the N54 bmw platform. Also no end user adjustability, you absolutely have to go through a “protuner”. I got burned bad by cobb during a race season with a customer running the global time attack. After all of this I decided it was not the right product for me or my customers. It is not a bad product, just that you are more limited and have some restrictions. So make sure to take those into account before spending your money and find what works for you and keep realistic expectations.

Good info, thank you! I like seeing others opinion especially when they have used both. This is for sure something I am considering my build will end up with the new version of the RV6 turbo/inlet and a catted downpipe.

I do not have access to flex fuel in my area so pump gas all the way for me. I do not live in an emissions area, simply just paying my dues when it comes time. I have no experience with Hondata or have a laptop to run it on so there is added cost but then again I could be wrong.
