After seeing a lot of the drop in turbo options for the FL5, I've started to wonder if anyone has had any luck with a set up that retains stock or near stock response, and can reach 500 HP reliably.

500whp with factory spool? Not going to happen unfortunately, there has to be a tradeoff.

The 27WON Kuro with an E30 fuel mixture or similar can achieve approximately 475whp with a lightning quick spool.

Your next best option is the 27WON Kuro+ which gives up a little bit more spool for a LOT more power up top, capable of up to 575whp or so.

Both of these options require fuel system upgrades, which can be a significant investment.

The factory fuel system can fuel an output of approximately 440whp on 93 octane fuel. In my opinion the 27WON Kuro is the best option for making the most out of the factory fuel system, which would yield about 425whp with a bit of breathing room left in terms of fueling capacity.

How much more noticeable is the lag with the kuro+? I figure if it's not too big, then that extra HP is definetly worth it for someone trying to get better times on the track

In our testing, turbo spool was as follows:

Kuro - Fully spooled by 3100RPM
Kuro+ - Fully spooled by 3500RPM
R660 - Fully spooled by 3900RPM

The standard Kuro has a lightning fast spool. You notice a small bit of lag in comparison when using the Kuro+ but the gains up top are worth it. The R660 takes it up another notch and we feel like you really need to be going for 600whp or more to justify the additional spool time of the R660.

Where does MHI stage 2 fall. I know you don't sell it so you don't have to comment if you don't want.

We do sell it but don't have many customers that order it. The MHI Stage 2 is in the power output ballpark of the Kuro+ from what I've seen. However the cost is higher and you receive a journal bearing turbocharger from MHI instead of a ball bearing turbocharger from 27WON.

From my experience,

MHI STG2- Fully spooled by 3700RPM

R660 - Fully spooled by 3900RPM , but with TR2 cam and VTC tuning , 300~400rpm eariler

R660 AS- Fully spooled by 4200RPM , but with TR2 cam and VTC tuning , 300~400rpm eariler , AS have quicker response time 4000RPM above when on/off your throttle.

Might be different depends on your mods.

Here’s my 93 base and e30 kuro. You can consider mhi stage 2 too. I’m going to spend a bit more investment in cams and ported head to get a bit more out of it without/before giving up spool rate for power.

27 Won Kuro (std)
DW300C
XDI HPFP
if750 filter
XDI 1400 injectors
pracworks intake manifold
Hondata canflex
JSR fuel line
stock cam

You can get everything from TSP. Corey will take care of your needs. Except for the JSR where you’d need to order it yourself.

I couldn’t upload video, it’s impressive the way it pulls from 2-3, 3-4.

on forth gear the gear imo is a bit too short for street driving and tighter tracks. I’m changing to rv6 1.176 gear to get a faster pull

Ain't cams just going to move the power band higher though? Kuro+ will give more power with a slight difference in spool time.

Keep us posted on this experiment. I thought about buying a built head. Was told that for my power there is no benefits.
I'm FBO, fuel system + flex fuel with kuro upgrade. I'm building for response closer to OEM don't want more than 450hp though.

That’s similar to mine and it makes about 430+ on 93 alone. It’s much more responsive than say 380 on stock turbo. But I feel the car could definitely use 500 or so. 4th onwards is sluggish
