Still Getting Adjusted to FWD | Homestead Miami Speedway Open Track Day

I was in R Mode and I still did the pedal dance before going out on track. For me the long press still felt as if the rear brakes were dragging. Could just be in my head. Lol

The "pedal dance" also disables Agile Handling Assist which will use front/rear brakes to help the car rotate and such. +R mode with VSA OFF doesn't disable that. On track, "pedal dance" is the way to go.

I'm tempted to reach out to a guy who built Arduino modules for the ND Miata or SES Electronics who've done some similar stuff for the FK8 to see if a "box" could be plugged in to allow an easy pedal dance button. Thankfully for street use TC/VSA is incredibly tolerant and doesn't make me want to slam it off every drive (like my wife's '13 Si).

Where I live there's no insurance as well. I do the best I can to avoid unnecessary risk, but I have come to terms eventually something is going to happen (and I have seen bad stuff happening...). Unfortunately, you are missing a small bit of joy this car brings you on a track.

I gave up track days in 2005 when insurance companies stopped covering driving schools. Didn’t want to pay for extra insurance.

I think a lot of people just roll the dice, even Americans, I don’t think everyone gets track insurance.

Understandably, $hit happens at the track. Most people I know drive within their bounds of skill and comfort level. Just about every event I’ve gone to, there has been at least one incident on the track. But, this past event I went to at Palmer, no incidents. None. At the end of the day, I’d say if you have to drive home in the car you drive on track, no need to push that hard.

I agree, I usually drive 7-8/10’s of my ability and the car. That’s not say sometimes I push a bit too far cause of the adrenaline, but I’m always able to stay within a margin of safety that I’m comfortable with.

This is the way to do it, slowly progress no need to go balls to the wall.

I've done about 40 track days with no insurance. I always say that my number one goal is leave the track with the car in one piece.

I don't abuse my cars, I don't drive at 10/10ths, I don't try to hold off faster cars behind me, I don't make aggressive passes on cars ahead. And I don't ask too much of the brakes. Understand the heat you are putting into the brakes and take it easy on them. If you do all that, you are likely to make it out of there with the car in one piece

Or when you are both on track it happens too. Friendly competition after all.

Regarding insurance, historically I've driven most of my events without insurance. I didn't even know that was a thing when I was younger. I also think it would depend on if I'm driving my only car on track versus having a spare car to fall back on. You probably need your car to get to work, take the kids to school, etc.

It's really up to each of us to decide the risk level and what the consequence would be if they push too hard (or someone else pushes too hard) and they have a bad day.

My main concern, considering the FL5 is FWD and I'm not going to be trying to get it sideways, is other drivers. Last thing I need is someone punting my car. For my first track event I'm definitely not worried about hitting 10/10ths across the track, all my experience is at <60mph or so with autocrossing a drifting low powered RWD cars.

I'm a bit afraid of the insurance costs making track days too expensive to justify, like I tell my wife I could just cash in some stocks for another Miata?
