Has anyone done this?
If so any pictures and how did you go about doing it?

I am wondering if high temp paint would stay on or if powder coating would be a option…issue would be cost as the exhaust is huge. Only thing I am not a huge fan of is the 3 shiny tips in the center.

I use hi-temp flat black spray paint on my tips. Occasionally a very small piece will chip off exposing the chrome underneath and I'll have to hit it w/ a quick spray. Usually occurs when I'm washing the car. Advice: keep high pressure washers away. lol

If you sand the tips prior to paint, the paint will probably stay on much better. The only problem I see is cleaning and sanding the insides of the tips. It’s probably better left to a professional to do it right.

Thanks for the reply. I may just have to leave them alone.

One of my least favorite design elements on the FL5 is the exhaust tips (at least/especially on a black FL5). The combination of chrome and the unequally-sized tips is off-putting. Unfortunately, the only way to address this is a full aftermarket exhaust replacement or axle-back replacement. Most of these are expensive, beyond my skillset/workspace (no car lift in the foreseeable future), and increase the dB—none of which I want to commit to at this time. After watching a few YT videos on painting exhaust tips I decided to paint them black myself while keeping everything bolted on the car. Below is my approach based on those videos, instructions on the cans, and some guesswork. I am hypothesizing that header paint with high heat tolerance (1300-2000 F) would be best to be in contact with the pipes while the glossy engine paint (<550 F) can sit on the header paint. Overall, I am happy with the results so far, but I did overspray the left tip on the last day. I will definitely follow up in a few months or if it cracks off.

Materials:
1. VHT Header Paint (flat black)
2. VHT Engine Paint (gloss black)
3. VHT Engine Enamel (gloss clear)
Prep:
  1. Clean tips
  2. Sand/scuff tips
  3. Clean with alcohol
  4. Tape in and around tips
