Missed shift 3rd to 2nd with resulting added NVH

Third gear highway pull, torque steer hit when turbo and VTEC hit pulling my body to the left slightly, just enough to where my hand position when I pulled down to go fourth gear was actually diagonal and therefore put me into second gear at 63 MPH. In theory this speed in second should be fine however there is notable added NVH after the event.

HONDATA logs show k retard on cyl 1,3 from 1-5, most commonly 1-3 degrees. I've gathered probably 20 logs since the event about 4 days ago. Currently sitting in the local Honda dealership putting the thing in for compression test and leak down. Fuck my life this shit is stupid. Wish me luck.

Scan the engine. If you have the overspeed code your warranty is void.

Secondly, I mean this in the nicest way. We are all human and make mistakes. I highly doubt the torque steer in a FL5 on a straight highway pull would move you physically enough to mis shift.

I’d bet nothing is wrong but as J_D said, if they pull an overspeed code they will be done with it. That’s Honda’s favorite “get out of warranty card”. I’m not saying a mis-shift should be warrantied but if anything ever comes up they will be quick to reference it.

yea i basically signed up for voided warranty when i ventured into modifying the car, i have made my peace with the void of my warranty, the main problem is the physical damage (if any, hopefully compression test is all good in which case i dust my hands of the issue as well) and getting it fixed in terms of cost and duration of repairs. also, i didn't specify, but i did use a zurich zr11 to pull DTCs with a net result of exactly 0 DTCs. hoping that translates to whatever tool they use over there at honda.

my main concern is the notable added noise vibration and harshness between 800-1500 and just about 2100-2300, after the event there is now a noticably louder oscillating vibrational noise that is clearly tied to drive train. anyway i will be recieving results from the compression and leak down tomorrow (hopefully morning) hoping for the best. if not, it was nice knowing you guys RIP. at least for now, obviously could be resleeved or similar to probably eliminate issues. but you get my point just takes time and money i might just be being a doomer but yea you get my point

Agree. Proper hand positioning when shifting, I think accounts for MANY of these money shift cases. Do not pistol grip the shifter from 3rd to 4th. Doing so may cause you to yank the shifter towards you, down into 2nd.

@jcm Check this out. Interestingly the author is using an Acura to demonstrate. Note : I think his hand positioning is a bit exaggerated, but gets the point across. Hope this helps, and your car isn’t hurt.

A placebo is a fake treatment that appears real, but has no therapeutic value. I think you simply meant the problem is in op’s head…in which case maybe he should be given a placebo to help get over it.

Sorry this happened. As others have said, we are all human. I was a few hundred rpm below a money shift on my brand new z06 on the race track a few years back. Misjudged my corner entry speed on a new unfamiliar track. PDR showed I was okay, but barely. I don’t know much about these engines yet, but changing your valve springs isn’t a bad idea and is cheap insurance.

If the motor is damaged try to look at the positive. Now you can rebuild it with better internals. Which means you can build more reliable power in your mods. Win win.

Has anyone redlined their car in each gear to see what they max at? I’ve read some math on it but have not tested the theory.

This is one of the things I love about rev match. I try to listen to the motor prior to clutch drop to make sure all is well. If I hear a massive rpm increase leave the clutch in.

results back car in my posession, looks like no damage, may end up doing some motor work anyway this may just be the demark point that begins some motor upgrades anyway like above post stated

update - ongoing monitoring

1. when cold - not much added NVH beyond added NVH from PRL RMM
2. when hot - after long drives - very much added NVH between 1k - 2k rpms
3. regardless of compression test and leakdown test result being good - i will be doing a check on connecting rods and rod bearings to ensure structural integrity as the oscillating vibrational noise ocurring after trips between 1k-2k is consistently getting louder and is definitely still a concern

at this time i suspect early stage damage to rod bearings resulting in observed additional, outside of normal NVH rpm-dependant oscillating vibration consistently growing worse


EDIT:

recieved my new LAUNCH obd2 scantool today, which shows logged misfires for cyl1+3.
this reinforces the above concerns and the vehicle will be going in for full scale diagnosis and repair

Check the engine oil and filter for glitter first. You might have an unrelated tune related issue that presented at same time. Plus the RMM is not helping.
