I recently bought my wife a cayenne 2023 for our family car. What I learned is that lane keep and adaptive cruise are each about 1700 dollar options. I recently went to check out an m2 for fun…I learned the same thing.

This made me really appreciate that these options are included on the type R at no extra cost. Made me love the car even more. Just wanted to share!

Lane keeping assist and adaptive cruise Control are the first options i turned off on my wife's Volvo v90 type R and my Civic type R. Adaptive cruise control is the worst form of cruise control I have ever used. It forces your car to slow down to the idiot in front of you driving 54 mph in the left lane. It also provides exactly the right spacing between your car and the car in front of you to encourage the cars in the right lane to cut you off. I haven't found the off switch for the adaptive cruise control on my FL5 yet, but if anyone on the forum has, please let me know.

I have no idea how people don’t like it lol. I can honestly say I’ve never had any issues. I drove this thing for 17k miles already and often use both functions without issue. You can also adjust distance for how much of a gap your car leaves. To each their own!

I can't test right now but I believe this video should help to disable adaptive cruise control. Skip to 2 minutes in.

I just want to confirm what you're saying here:

You think basic cruise control that would maintain the same speed and crash into the car in front of you going 54 is better?

Adjustable following distances are somehow all the exact right space for someone to cut in front of you despite them providing different distances?

Adaptive cruise is the first option you turned off on you Civic Type R, but you haven't found the off switch?

Also, Volvo does not make a V90 Type R.

Perhaps the issue is not the adaptive cruise control....

On a long trip maybe I'd try the adaptive cruise control. The Lane keep assist is also the 1st thing I have turned off . Not a fan , I like to drive and control all my own movements .

I only use it for long distance trips that require little to no steering. The ACC can be a little stupid at times. It brakes when it just needs to let off the gas, I get looks sometimes because people think I am brake checking them.

All off all the time,
If there was a DELETE option for these features, I'd buy it.
I can't imagine ever trusting any of the nanny features well enough to use them.
I know how to drive.
For me, all they do is add weight, cost, and complication.

Thanks for the advice from the fellow drivers who are reluctant to relinquish control of their cars to machines, especially dumb machines who can't even feather the brake pedal or accelerator. I appreciate the advice on how to turn off the Adaptive Cruise control and will try it right away. To @John5880, I'm sorry your mother didn't give you enough attention as a child to produce such an angry person. Of course I wouldn't drive into the car in front of me in the left lane, but it's difficult to encourage that driver to yield the passing lane when your car keeps slowing down to match the slowest driver. BTW, my wife's car is a Volvo V90 R Design. Sorry for the naming error, but at least all its advanced safety features are easily disabled for those who find them intrusive.

That’s what I hate about it too. It can be a little unpredictable at times. I’ve had it brake on me as I was approaching a bend in the road. It saw that I was approaching a safety rail or something off to the side that “it thought” was directly ahead of me. I’ve had this happen with our MDX too. It hit the brakes hard on the highway (with my family in the car) because I was driving around a curve while approaching a semi in the other lane.🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ While the system works OK most of the time, I definitely don’t trust it.

ACC varies so much by manufacturer and generation. The ACC is my 2017 Grand Cherokee is not great. Brakes late and freaks out when someone cuts into my lane. My 2018 Alfa Giulia was fantastic. It was rated by one car mag to be only second to the Teslas. I no longer have that car but it was def. one of the best. Our 2021 Honda Odyssey is about on par with the FL5 but the FL5 has way better lane assist. Since the FL5 has a manual, it doesnt do "as much" as the Odyssey. On long family trips, ACC in the Odysset makes the drive so much easier. I can't sleep at the wheel, but I also don't have to be on and off the gas for hours and if I hit stop and go traffic, it's great. I know some earlier year Honda's were not good. I have a friend who's Pilot would freak out all the time. She finally got rid of it and won't get another Honda product at all.

I also don't trust it any car on sharpe curves. It still relies on radar and/or camera to make decisions. On curve roads, they can't always see the full arc of the lane markers or be able to tell what the car in front of you (or coming at you) is doing. Like all tech, learn to use it with it's limits and it should make your life easier, not harder.

@Djseto Well, that’s sort of the problem and the source of frustration, right? Finding out the limits can be dangerous and it’s not always consistent/ predictable. Adding to the frustration is that we (you and others included) know that there are better systems out there. I’ve found GM’s tech to be quite good (at least in their large vehicles, like the Yukon), even in vehicles from 6-8+ years ago. ACC is not new technology anymore, so it’s hard for me to look past the shortcomings especially as it seems like the ACC (in Hondas and Acuras) hasn’t improved since the previous generation vehicles.

All imma say on this is that yall that hate the assist are definitely expecting way more than I am out of it lol. I use it on straight highway driving with minimal traffic lol. No curves, no turns, minimal cars. I will always take over when there is more traffic or turning involved. It’s just a nice feature to have when you wanna take it easy driving from Illinois into Canada lol.

I used to keep the steering assist on when I would cruise control until I realized how sleepy it made me haha

But adaptive cruise control is nice and ime is so much more enjoyable with any manual vs automatics since the auto's always seem way to eager to shift gears whether it up or down for any speed changes

I live way out near rural areas and often use lane assist cause it’s just a straight shot to get to work in the morning; so keeps the car straight without me doing much. Once I get to the turns, I have a little fun lol.
