Howzit everyone,

I’ve been searching for a way to lock my key fob in my car so I can surf.

I found this thread on reddit to turn off the lockout protection
Tip #10 at about 10:20

For the life of me I can’t figure out why it’s not working. I do not want to surf with the key fob for the danger of losing it and I made a spare emergency key that I can put in my board shorts.

To test, the lock out protection what happens is I’ll put the key in the car, hit the lock switch, close the door and it will immediately unlock. Which is fine and expected.
I set a timer for 15seconds expecting the car to relock itself. However nothing happens. I’ve given it up to a minute in multiple rounds of testing without achieving the ability to lock the key fob in the car.

Anyone have any ideas how to do this? Or did I miss something following these steps?
Or does the CTR have a different protocol?

Leaving the fob in the car does not sound like a great idea IMHO. Why not just ask a friend to hold onto it while you surf? If the area is remote, you could put the fob in a bag and bury it in the sand near your stuff left on the beach.

***Edit***

Noticed that you live in Hawaii. If someone were to jack your car while you were surfing, how far could they really go without getting caught? Living on an island is an additional deterrent.

Thanks, it’s a risk I’m willing to take as I usually surf solo and at a pretty crowded beaches. I used to do this all the time with my BRZ and hide the fob in discreet locations in the car.

I will buy one of those waterproof pouches and figure it out, but I’d rather do that as more of an option down the line

What island?
Oahu. Right? Where you gonna go if you jacked my car? There isn’t a high number of these on the road.

I mostly surf south shore but will make the journey to north shore when it isn’t super crazy.

Cool...I lived on Oahu in the late 80's...Much has changed since then. Waikiki was always a no no...Needed to paddle out a ways to get past the reef where waves begin to break. Same location where many surfers dropped kids off at the pool so as not to have to paddle all the way back to shore.

Haleiwa was my go to for year round surfing. Great waves overall and closer to shore. Likely more crowded now though.

Regarding the fob, I'd suggest finding other locations to hide rather than trying to figure out how to lock it in the car.

I know what you mean. I love the longboard waves of Waikiki but it’s too much with the hierarchy there.

Haleiwa is still a great spot, definitely crowded. I like Ehukai too, get to surf near pipe and the pros but not deal with too much of a line up. I normally hit dawn patrol and back to town before the crazy north shore traffic that starts at lunch ish.

Thanks, I’ll take your suggestion into consideration. It cheap enough to get a dry bag and have the fob on me. Just would suck if it got wet and a new one is several hundred.

You could disconnect the key from the fob and then remove the battery from the fob and take the key & battery with you leaving the fob hidden in the car which is kind of a pain.

I have to lock up customer cars at the end of the day for work and I’ve found a way that works on a lot of make/models. Give this a try- put the driver’s window down and then get out of the car. Reach through the window and press the start button twice to turn the car on. Press the lock button. Press start button again to turn the car off. Use the auto up function to close the window.
Some newer cars are getting smart and disable the auto up function so it may not work but worth a try.

Would it work if you put the key in a Faraday bag before hiding it so the car would think it's left the car?
This is what I was thinking. The reason it won’t lock is it detects the key. Put it in a Faraday bag (or wrap it in tinfoil) problem solved,

Thanks fellas! Appreciate the support and suggestions. I think I’ll spend a bit of cash to figure it out but in my cart is a waterproof bag for a key fob as well as a faraday bag. Hopefully this all works out.

I know people have fake lotion or sunscreen containers to hide their valuables. They’re available on Amazon. Just another sneaky/wetless option, if you’re still debating on the waterproof bag.
