Dead thread is apparently not that dead.

Almost 2 years on, it's pretty clear that build quality is hit or miss. Some people have horror stories. Some people (myself included) have no complaints. I think overall it is a fallacy to expect better build quality from the FL5, but hey this is an FL5 forum and most would likely disagree. Overall we all have our own individual tolerances for what we think is unacceptable, and if it makes you sleep better at night because it was "made in Japan", then good for you! Personally I think it's pretty funny... but I also have met people from Ohio that I wouldn't like the idea of building my car, so I guess you have a point.

Especially on a Monday or Tuesday (or Friday...) after a late Browns/Bengals game. I've said this before, and perhaps Occam's Razor implies I'm on to something.

My only real gripe for my car is the wastegate actuator, which is not exclusive the to the DE5. This too is hit or miss but it feels like there's more FL5 owners complaining about it... Other than that my car has been a blessing. Even the paint and body panels are perfect, as far as I can tell.

The only thing that matters in this conversation is personal preference. If you want one over the other, then your choice is made. Otherwise, pick what you can get the best deal on and don't look back.

This. I (apparently) got lucky. My panel gaps aren't bad, all the panels are well aligned, I don't have paint issues, the only rattle I had was a loose plug below the dash, etc.

My car was also an early build, though (#55). I am wondering if perhaps quality overall went down after the honeymoon phase of building the cool new car ended.

Yeah just traded in my fl5 for a de5 and I couldn’t be happier. I can drive in sport plus all the time and not fill like I’m a popcorn kernel and the sound system is significantly better than the fl5 Bose setup. I also detail cars as a hobby and the clear coat and paint is significantly better than the Honda product from I have seen in my de5. The fl5 is special but so is the de5 as it’s significantly more of comfortable daily driver and imho a great option for those of us that don’t fit in the type r seats as well (6’2” 195) quality wise both cars are the same or at least from what I have seen had paint knicks all over my front bumper. Also I think my fl5 had a crappy transmission, 2nd gear scratch many times and no answer from the dealer, driven my de5 almost a 600 miles and nothing doesn’t matter if I’m launching hard or quick shifting zero scratch or 2nd gear grind so maybe my fl5 was a dud? But to each their own but the de5 is amazing.

You may very well be onto something. Mine is in the 90s, I'm guessing it was in the first batch of Performance Red cars. Red wasn't my first color choice... actually it was white until I heard people complaining about color matching issues then I wanted Apex Blue... but I'm very happy with the color, especially with these wheels.

Since the DE5 has some sound insulation under the hood (FL5 has none), i wonder if that plays a factor in masking that noise a bit more on that platform compared to ours.

You couldn't tell me that lol. It's loud as hell! I think there's just more FL5s. A lot more, judging by the current inventory numbers (assuming the data this tool is pulling from is correct):
