First come first serve deposit process is how to solve that. Means people would have to actually get on the horn and do some work to get in line.
Exactly. I love when people keep posting looking for leads, especially for MSRP 😂. Pick up the phone and start calling. I was on a list from calling since last December, but called 30+ dealers that last week of October and found one (thanks to AspecR). Also very surprised how many dealers didn’t have a list.

First come first serve doesn’t even work for popular Air Jordan 1 releases. Like the most recent Lost & Found.

Bots would scoop up all the spots in seconds. I can promise you that.
These cars can’t be bought by bots though. First
come first serve isn’t perfect but it is a better solution than most others. Like you said for out-right fairness a raffle/lottery is the best solution.

I can only see lottery systems working if its fair and there's no hidden strings being pulled which I don't see happen with the money involved.

If theres a lottery system then if you don't get it you will be relegated to the scalpers. Without it you are regulated to stealerships. Either way you aren't going to win, you are going to have deal with markups in either situation.

The only true solution I can see is to make the cars made to order. If a dealership is getting like 100 orders that need to be filled its probably because they are raking in their customers, and the manufacturer shouldn't care because their only job is to just get the car to the dealership.

You can't have a lottery system when you can't buy the car directly from the manufacturer. Independently owned franchise dealers who buy the car from Honda and then resell would never play ball on something like that and why should they. If you play out buying directly from Honda at MSRP in a no negotiation scenario all the cars I bought in the past at invoice/below invoice would have been MSRP deals. I saved much more getting deals than I ever paid in ADM. Supply demand works plain and simple.

Very true. Many many thousands saved using one dealer as leverage against others. Plus the taxes saved on the negotiated lower cost.

Pic of my best deal ever for illustration purposes... I'll take the franchise system and inherent competition/ability to negotiate any day of the week even if it means occasionally having to deal with ADM scenarios.

I’m going to whole heartedly disagree the lottery. I put my money where my mouth was 12 months ago when prototypes were covered with cardboard boxes and duct tape. 10 months I waited for it to come in. With a lottery I’d have had almost no chance landing a car and some guy who jumps on the hype train once the car drops would probably get it.

In todays car market you need to be thinking 12-24 months ahead if you want anything desirable.

I don’t agree with the lottery either but it is the most fair. You’re speaking from a place of entitlement because you’re a real enthusiast. Trust me I believe these cars should go to genuine enthusiasts but if we’re talking about pure fairness, there aren’t much better solutions than a lottery. Unless Honda makes enough to satisfy demand, all of the demand.

How is going to my dealership while a car is still in development and giving them my money interest free as a down payment/deposit and waiting ten months being entitled? I had no idea how scarce or in demand the vehicle was going to be. Neither did the dealership. So I’m supposed to sit there and wait a year for my car and lose it last minute because some guy with fomo decides he wants in on the party too? I don’t think so….lol.

You’re misunderstanding where I’m coming from. I wholeheartedly agree with you my guy. I’m just saying, you feel that you putting your money down ahead everyone should guarantee you get a car, it should and thankfully it does. I’m only referring to pure fairness where each person that’s interested has an equal chance of getting the car based on the amount of ppl that inquire. A lottery system forgoes whoever was interested first in favor whoever is interested at all.

I’m still going to have to disagree with your fairness argument. I like your lottery system if it came to landing the hottest girl in town though…🤪

edit: wait I retract that statement! It implies I can’t get the hot chick on my own accord!

LOL listen to hell with a lottery system I don’t want it, ppl only complain when things aren’t going in their favor. Im only referring to the odds when it comes to a lottery system.

Notice how there are no threads about when people were able to buy civics at invoice. But god forbid a dealership charges a dollar during a global shortage everybody thinks death to dealerships.

This is the reason I think death to dealerships and it applies to me as I heard it all through the Covid years at the complex I work at.
