Car stalled upon start up, even if the trans was in neutral

Hey everyone,

Manual car noob here. When I started the engine of my FL5 today, it stalled. I checked and pretty sure the car was in neutral. I am not sure why the car stalled. My guess is that I might have lifted off the clutch too soon. My questions are,
1. Has anyone had similar experience before? Should I be worried that this might indicate any issue with the car?
2. Does this cause any damage to the car whatsoever?

I just started learning to drive manual cars so would really appreciate some insights on this. Thanks a lot everyone in advance!!

No damage, if any it would be negligible. You probably lifted off the clutch too fast when starting the car.
Thanks! Now I am feeling better:)

Just out of curiosity, what is the reason behind lifting off the clutch too fast causing the engine to stall? I thought if the car is in neutral, the engine won't stall?

This definitely happens if you release the clutch before it has fully fired up. My guess is because the car doesn’t know if it is in gear at startup and better to kill the ignition than risk the car lurching forward accidentally.

Thanks! That's a very valid guess! Yep, I definitely released the clutch too quickly this time. I guess a good rule of thumb is I should probably wait until the dash fully comes on.

Just get use to people laughing and pointing at you every time you hit the red light lol

Jk it's not rocket science and the car practically drive itself. Few weeks of driving and you will be just fine.

Yea, CTR is probably the most friendly to drive with for stick shift learners on the market right now. I have had the car for a few weeks now and it's been amazing!

Yeah, the only thing easier might be an Si. Same shifter. Clutch feel is pretty much the same. Less power. Be sure you understand what engine lugging is and how to avoid it. That’s the main thing that I’ve seen new manual transmission drivers have problems with…and it can lead to engine damage. The problem is worse, the more powerful the engine is. 🙂

Now that you mention it, can you explain more what engine lugging is?

FL5 is actually the easier car to drive. It has the anti-stall which helps when you aren't giving it enough throttle. The extra power allows for better gearing and requires less revs to get going. That was the most annoying part of the SI, getting going initially. And first gear in the FL5 is actually useable.
