Who is getting tuned on the dyno?

I've always got my cars tuned on the dyno first. Then refined at the track. However nowadays or at least with these cars it's not that common.
If one doesn't have actual data to see what is going on then how are you to know what works and what doesn't.

People are still getting dyno tunes, Derek Robinson at IMW tunes (along many other tuners) on his own dyno and virtually on other shop's dynos if the customer is not local to him. A lot of tuners now also offer e-tunes like JesterTuned or IMW. Our cars are able to log the AFR (I believe its effectively the same as a wideband) in data logs so tuners can adjust stuff without needing to stuff a physically gauge into the exhaust on a dyno. I am sure a dyno tune is better but a e-tune will get you a lot of the way there!

If one doesn't have actual data to see what is going on then how are you to know what works and what doesn't.
I have dynoed quite a few cars. So once you have tuned a lot of them you get and idea of where you are at by just looking at rhe log.

Also comparing dyno numbers is pointles, best practice is to get a baseline on the dyno you will be using then tuning to see the Delta.

I offer dyno tuning services in person and remote but this costs more since I have to be there uninterrupted.

Comparing dyno with others is pointless agreement there.
However each car is different. But without getting tuned on dyno or at the track one really doesn't know what there dealing with. My first evo was tuned by lance ho lung of toyomoto. Only made 500. Most of these cars remain stock turbo, it has been well documented that they make around 360-380whp depending on dyno on pump gas.

But like I said I’m happy to do a dyno session for a customer. They just have to pay for it. Even then after a dyno session the car should be revised on the street. And stuff changes and power will change.

That is perfectly fine. Just know that you will spend a considerable amount for minimal gains to be observed on the dyno on a stock turbo. Since when you tune a bunch of these cars they end up making around the same horsepower and with fuel octane being the limit most of them end up around the same area. So you get a very good idea of where you will find the limit.

I love my dyno’s and going to them, but mainly I test my cars at the track. But let’s put a real world example that happened to me. Went to a dyno with a car, car made good power. At the track with the heatsoak the car was being pushed too hard. So tune had to be dialed down. Thus the car is no longer making as good numbers as the dyno.

Making all that time and effort and money spent a waste, when we could have just tuned it at the track to where it was happy. Regardless of the numbers.

Don’t get me wrong I love dyno’s just that for most it is an extra expense that it is hard to justify when you can get close with a street tune maybe 90% of the way. If you want that extra 10% then dyno is the avenue for you.

A carburetor with a proper logging setup is better then the best ecu if you cant log properly.

Modern cars run lots of functions in closed loop so even a stage 2 or 3 tune can be easily applied to many different cars and it works.

Of course in most cases it´s a crappy tune that has been replicated to a lot of people.

I like dynos to test subtle stuff like doing minor camshaft adjustments and some other stuff. Other then that a good street tune is unbeatable in terms of adapting it to your needs.

I'd have to catch a flight to find someone that knows how to tune FL5 on a dyno 😂 if I didn't have remote option I'd be stock at the moment. I also like the ability to log a 20 or 30 minute track session and see what's up. Have that planned for next weekend 👍

If I had something nearby I would change my tune 😂

In a perfect world the dyno is used as a rough draft and perfected in real time on the street. A virtual E tune that uses data from the street is arguably better and definitely not worse.
